Therapy for Anxiety & Perfectionism
in Arlington, VA

Your mind is always one step ahead. Thinking about what could go wrong, what you need to get done, whether you made the right decision, or what someone else might be thinking about you.

You put a lot of pressure on yourself to get things right. Decisions can feel bigger than they need to, mistakes are hard to let go of, and there always seems to be something else you could be doing, fixing, or figuring out. Even when things are going well, it can be hard to fully relax and enjoy them.

Maybe you’ve lived this way for so long that you’re not even sure what it would feel like to quiet some of the noise. You just know you’re tired of everything feeling so hard.

You May Be Here Because

Anxiety and perfectionism can find their way into almost every part of your life.

  • You take forever to make a decision because you’re afraid you’ll regret the choice you make.

  • You replay conversations afterward and wonder if you said too much, sounded weird, or upset someone.

  • You have a hard time saying no without feeling guilty or worrying about how the other person will react.

  • You look for reassurance that everything is okay, but the relief never seems to last very long.

  • You accomplish something you worked really hard for and almost immediately start thinking about what’s next.

  • You compare yourself to other people and somehow always find a reason you’re falling behind.

  • You have trouble resting when there’s something productive you could be doing instead.

  • You know you don’t have to be perfect, but knowing that hasn’t stopped you from expecting it from yourself.

Understanding Anxiety and Perfectionism

Anxiety and perfectionism often feed each other. Anxiety keeps you thinking about what could go wrong, while perfectionism tries to prevent it by planning ahead, working harder, getting things right, or making sure other people are okay with you.

For some people, perfectionism has been around for so long that it can be hard to recognize. It might look like being responsible, successful, organized, or the person everyone can count on. Underneath that can be a fear of failing, disappointing someone, being judged, losing control, or simply not feeling like you’re enough.

Over time, carrying that much pressure can become exhausting. You may feel burned out, disconnected from yourself, less motivated, or even depressed. We can begin understanding where these patterns came from and what keeps them feeling so necessary now.

Anxiety & Perfectionism Therapy at Soul Bloom

We’ll start by getting specific about where anxiety and perfectionism are showing up in your life. Maybe it’s in your relationships, work, decisions, boundaries, food or body image, or the expectations you have for yourself.

I want to understand what happens underneath the overthinking. What are you afraid might happen if you make the wrong choice, disappoint someone, slow down, or let something be good enough? We can begin noticing the beliefs and experiences that keep those fears going and find different ways of responding when they show up.

Some of our work might involve self-criticism, people-pleasing, boundaries, difficult emotions, or the parts of you that feel responsible for keeping everything under control. I may also integrate EMDR or Internal Family Systems (IFS) when those approaches feel useful.

Over time, I want you to spend less energy questioning yourself. To make decisions with more confidence, rest without immediately feeling guilty, let other people have their own reactions, and trust yourself even when you can’t know for certain that you’re making the “right” choice.
